EDITION 7: Every Event Has a Soundtrack
From the first arrival to the last dance, music has a remarkable influence on how an event feels.

Walk into a beautifully dressed room with no music playing and you'll notice something is missing. The lighting might be perfect, the drinks ready and the flowers spectacular, but the atmosphere hasn't quite arrived.
A pianist, a saxophonist or simply a well-chosen track can change that in seconds.
Music sets expectations. It gives guests a sense of the occasion before anything has really begun. And as the event progresses, its role changes.
During drinks and dinner, music should generally encourage conversation rather than compete with it. There's nothing worse than spending an entire meal shouting across the table because somebody has mistaken background music for a nightclub.
Then there are the moments when music takes centre stage.
Weddings are perhaps the most obvious example. From the processional to the first dance, music accompanies some of the day's most significant moments. Cultural traditions bring their own musical expectations too, with songs and dances that guests know, recognise and often eagerly anticipate. They're part of the celebration, not simply entertainment.
And of course, there's the dance floor.
A good DJ does far more than play popular songs. They read the room, understand the audience and know when to change direction. Sometimes the right track can bring an entire room onto the dance floor. The wrong one can empty it just as quickly.
This is why I think it's worth planning an event's music as a soundtrack rather than a playlist.
Consider how you want the room to feel at different points in the evening. What should guests hear when they arrive? Does the music need to change as dinner finishes? Is there a particular song that signals the start of the party? Are there traditions or special moments that need their own musical cues?
Even the end of the evening deserves some thought. Rather than abruptly switching everything off, a change in tempo can help bring the night to a natural close.
And long after the event, music has a wonderful way of bringing it all back. A song comes on in the car or a restaurant and suddenly you're remembering a wedding, a birthday, a particular dance or a room full of people you love.
Every event has a soundtrack. It's worth giving yours some thought.
ElleQ helps you plan the entertainment, timings and flow of your event, from the first arrival to the final goodbye.
